The Project
As part of the European LIFE12 program for the integrated protection of the Mediterranean monk seal in the Northern Cyclades (Natura 2000 area of Gyaros Island), in collaboration with WWF and BUSINESS COSMOS SYSTEMS, KAFKAS designed a complete energy production and storage system from Renewable Energy Sources (RES). The uniqueness of the application posed high requirements from the outset, as there was no existing infrastructure or access to the facilities, meaning that the equipment had to be transported by helicopter to the application site.
KAFKAS’ Contribution
The system was designed to combine energy production from a photovoltaic (PV) system (5kWp) and a wind turbine (350W), while the generator set (4.2kVA) with the Hoppecke battery system (1500Ah) ensured maximum energy availability. The DC and AC panels constructed by KAFKAS were fully aligned with the study’s requirements and met the needs of a distribution system installed in an outdoor environment with harsh weather conditions.
In collaboration with project partners, the NATIONAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS and SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC, and together with BUSINESS COSMOS SYSTEMS, a complete hybrid system of high performance and reliability was developed and delivered. In just one week, active equipment was delivered and the remote monitoring system was developed, enabling the condition of energy production and storage to be monitored. This system ensured an annual production of 7,500kWh and guaranteed continuous monitoring of the area.
