In 2020, the construction of the new 5-star Robinson Club Ierapetra hotel was completed in Ierapetra, Crete. This high-end, minimalist hotel spans 150 hectares and is fully integrated into its geographical environment. The hotel features 340 rooms, 3 restaurants, 3 bars, 4 swimming pools, a spa, football and tennis courts, a beach volleyball area, a fully equipped outdoor theater, and expansive green spaces.
The design of the hotel’s interior spaces was based on two main themes: the History of Crete and Ecology. Given that lighting was an essential part of the design, the atmosphere of each space was shaped by the seamless relationship between structure, materials, and the intangible nature of light.
The lighting strategy and the design of the overall exterior lighting, executed by the KAFKAS team, prioritized integration into the natural environment, orientation, circulation signage, the subtle highlighting of material textures, and standardization with a focus on durability and long-term maintenance.
KAFKAS’ Contribution
KAFKAS and its HUB Lighting & Innovation, a specialized business unit for lighting and building automation solutions, were among the key suppliers for the project, serving as the exclusive suppliers for both interior and exterior lighting across all areas of the hotel.
Among the materials supplied by KAFKAS were linear wallwasher lights, flexible linear LED lights, beam lights, trimless magnetic ceiling rails with adjustable beam projectors, hidden lighting, recessed spots, and disc-shaped lights made from gold leaf.
A key consideration throughout the project was achieving the highest level of standardization in materials. For a hotel of such scale, the ease of maintenance was a major focus to ensure that the lighting results would remain consistent over time, preserving the intended lighting characteristics for the long term.
